Woodsist and (((folkYEAH!))) are pleased to announce this year’s Woodsist Festival, returning to the Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, CA for the 4th year in a row, as well as a one-day event at Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown the following weekend. Two mellow days of music and celebration under the giant redwoods on the California coast and one in the desert near Joshua Tree. With six bands per day in Big Sur and seven in Pioneertown, this year will feature current and past Woodsist acts along with some of our favorite artists. Tickets for the Big Sur event will go on sale this Friday May 3, and tickets for Pioneertown will go on sale next Tuesday May 7.

Woods are hitting the road this Spring & Summer, with a May trip to Europe where they will appear at festivals like The Great Escape and Primavera Sound. In July the band will tour the East Coast and Midwest with Parquet Courts, including a return trip to Pitchfork Fest in Chicago. The band will release a new single on July 9 in celebration of the tour.

The recording of these songs serves as a farewell to Rear House, Woods’ home, recording studio, creative refuge and beloved shithole for 10 long years. “God’s Children” is a classic Kinks tune from the soundtrack to the 1971 British film “Percy.” “Be All Be Easy,” originally from 2011′s Sun and Shade, was rerecorded to capture the live form that’s taken shape since it’s original release. Both are the first to feature new drummer, Aaron Neveu.

Sophomore LP from Real Estate’s bassist due this May

“New Jersey-born Alex Bleeker is an old soul. For his sophomore album, How Far Away, he lets that come into play fully. Over 11 tracks, he deals with the autumnal phase of lost love, the point after the grieving subsides and you start figuring out what you’re supposed to do next. As with his last album, Bleeker cobbles together a ragtag collection of “freaks,” including Mountain Man’s Amelia Meath, who provides gorgeously weighty backing vocals on four tracks, Woods’ Jarvis Tanviere, Real Estate’s Jackson Pollis, Big Troubles’ Sam Franklin, among plenty of other like-minded musicians who lend sparkling instrumental flourishes and a full-bodied backbone to Bleeker’s pained yowl. Album opener “Don’t Look Down” feels like a mission statement for the rest of the record. Over upbeat guitar jangle and smooth organ runs, Bleeker’s voice cracks and lilts: “Don’t look back on the way we met/ don’t look back at me now/ don’t retract all the things you’ve said/ don’t back out on me.” In the hands of plenty of other songwriters this would come off as self-pitying, but Bleeker just seems wise. The key to How Far Away isn’t just Bleeker’s lyrics, which manage to be both universal and intensely specific, but also the relaxed dynamics of the players. Bleeker is a jam band fanatic, and he takes the core ethos of The Grateful Dead-let things unfold naturally-and distills it into concise pop songs: tracks like “All My Songs” and “Rhythm Shakers” are brief, but they shift from crystaline guitar to weighty bass effortlessly, with Bleeker working as a heartbroken bandleader, keeping things moving organically. Nothing is hurried, but nothing overstays its welcome either. Though How Far Away is packed with singles, the album works best as a narrative about the dissolution of a relationship. You could call it a breakup record, but that wouldn’t quite be giving it enough credit. Instead, it’s about growing older and figuring out what you need to do to keep moving. Three years on from the initial Herbcraft blurt, this third Herbcraft LP sees a full blossoming of sonic seeds sown in previous wax transmissions. Once the isolationist bedroom-psych project of Matt Lajoie, the intervening years have found Herbcraft sprawling out in many different full-band incarnations–duo, trio, quartet, sextet–for tours and heady super-sessions at their HQ in Maine. The Astral Body Electric finds the most enduring lineup of the band at its peak: songs half-composed, half-improvised, and played with freewheeling first-take intensity. Recorded direct to tape by Doug Tuttle (Mmoss) in an 18th-century New England barn, the focus on analog recording techniques (spring reverb, tape delay, hands-on flange) captures the Herbcraft soundworld in its most-natural habitat. Matt’s unhinged electric guitar swirls around Dawn Aquarius’ wah’ed organ riffs, Nicholas Barker’s kosmische-inspired drums and synth, and Corinna Marshall’s trilled-out flute and circular bass, complete with nebulous group vocals and auxiliary support from Doug (Mmoss) and Aaron Neveu (Woods). “Aurally massaged” into the 4th dimension by Matt “MV” Valentine with his signature “Spectrasound” mastering technique, The Astral Body Electric is psychedelic, mantric, free-rock music for the mind and body, and the most expansive, fully-realized, and confident Herbcraft record yet.

The Woolen Men are three — two Oregon natives and a Washingtonian. They play punk influenced DIY music in the Pac-NW tradition of Dead Moon and the Wipers. More than a sound or style, that means a kind of work ethic — do-it-yourself and do it a lot. The band is happiest touring up and down the I-5 or bunkered in their practice space with the cassette 4-track rolling. And it shows. Live, the band is thunderous and energetic and the magnetic chemistry of the three of them playing together shines through in the recordings.

This self-titled album released by Woodsist Records is their debut LP, following a handful of largely self-released EPs. Instead of changing their technique of recording fast and loose to capture the live energy of their sound, they recorded and recorded and recorded until they had enough songs to make up an album only of material with that elusive spark of a great recording. The ten tracks here represent five different sessions, and as many songs made the cut as were left behind. The LP was made to endure, with little attention payed to current trends or “in” sounds — what matters to the band is that the songs are well written and executed with integrity. The whole thing was recorded to analog tape.

The Woolen Men are Alex Geddes, Lawton Browning and Raf Spielman. They live and work in Portland, OR. Raf previously released an album of solo material under his Polyps moniker for the Woodsist sister label Hello Sunshine.
